The mission of the Boston Bar Foundation is to promote justice by funding and fostering innovation in legal services, enhancing access to justice for the underserved and supporting the public interest activities of the bar.

As the charitable affiliate of the Boston Bar Association, our mission is inspired by the values of professionalism, service, compassion and responsibility. We believe these are values that all attorneys owe to themselves, their peers and their community.

We believe every individual that needs to turn to the legal system should be able to find the help they need. We believe in opening doors for the next generation of our city, and working each day to make Boston a better place to live and work. Most of all, we believe in the unique power of lawyers to improve our community.

Investing in the Future of our City

The Boston Bar Foundation funds the full portfolio of Boston Bar Association public service programs – providing educational and career opportunities for Boston students, engaging private attorneys in pro bono service, and acting as a first responder to needs in our community.

Through the Military and Veterans Legal Help Line, the Boston Bar connects hundreds of active members of the military, veterans and their families with urgently-needed lawyers.

Our pro bono volunteers provide critical assistance to thousands of low-income tenants and landlords through our Lawyer for the Day in the Housing Court program.

Each summer, the Boston Bar Foundation helps introduce diverse teens to the legal profession by funding the BBA’s Summer Jobs program, including providing fully funded public interest positions for Boston Public School students.

Advancing the Profession

The Boston Bar Foundation invests in a variety of Boston Bar Association projects and programs that empower lawyers, promote professional excellence, foster a diverse legal community and engage attorneys in informing and shaping policy and advocacy efforts.

Promoting Leadership Development

The BBF supports projects, programs and initiatives that foster the professional growth, community involvement and leadership skills of lawyers. This year, the Boston Bar formally launched the Women’s Leadership & Advancement Forum, which is dedicated to promoting and generating fundamental change across areas of gender inequality within the legal profession.

Advancing Diversity & Inclusion Efforts

Through the Beacon Fund, the BBF supports the diversity and inclusion work of the Boston Bar, convening groups to discuss the barriers that underrepresented attorneys face, hosting thought leaders to learn more about the inequities in the profession, and recognizing change agents that have made strides in advancing diversity and inclusion.

Supporting Policy Research and Innovation

The BBF supports policy related projects, programs or initiatives that focus on promoting justice, expanding access to the legal system and advancing the law and profession. In the fall of 2017, thanks in part to a BBF grant, the Boston Bar released “No Time to Wait: Recommendations for a Fair and Effective Criminal Justice System.”

Each pledge is a permanent gift to the Boston Bar Foundation endowment, providing a lasting and stable base of support for our work as we expand opportunities for Boston’s youth, provide critical assistance for those in need, and create a brighter future for our city.
